about

This is the second song I wrote for/about Jethro Morris. I met Jethro in Kent when I was 20, in the summer break from university, outside a local open mic night and there was an instant mutual attraction between us. The first thing Jethro ever said to me was “Who are you, you’re beautiful,” and he called me ‘Nico’ because he thought I resembled Nico from the Velvet Underground. Jethro, who claimed to be descended from a Persian prince, had the most beautiful, almond-shaped grey eyes, framed with long lashes, and dark, curly hair, that I’d ever seen. He was also a talented rapper and lyricist – using the name J-RO – with a love of folk, jazz and the avant-garde. Older than me and unemployed, alienated and living in a half-way house due to mental health issues and homelessness, he hadn’t had the best start in life but was highly intelligent, insightful and entertaining and enjoyed art, philosophy and literature. We’d grown up less than a ten-minute walk from each other, yet never met, and I wished I’d met him when I was much younger. This song is about a New Year’s Eve kiss next to the William Harvey statue in Folkestone. William Harvey discovered that blood circulated around the body and both my brother’s school and the nearest major hospital, in Ashford, are named after him. I wrote this song after my brother informed me a few months later, in the bluntest possible way, that after I had gone back to university Jethro had impregnated a teenage girl from Folkestone. We didn’t see each other for a while, but remain friends today.

lyrics

You pushed me up against the wall
Said it was like we were in some kind of indie film
The stars they pumped above us
By the William Harvey statue

Where are you now though
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to love
Where are you now though
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to be in love with
Me

You said it was the perfect kiss
Just like the Jens Lekman sang about
The blood rushed to my head
By the William Harvey statue

Where are you now though
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to love
Where you are now though
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to be in love with

You said I looked like an angel
In my 1950s yellow lace dress
The butterflies you gave me in my stomach, though
Turned into moths that ate it all away

Where are you now though
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to love
Where you are now thought
Back then I thought that making love
Meant that you had to be in love with

about

The Shrieking Violets Manchester, UK

When I was at school I didn't say very much, but wrote copiously. My ambitions were to be editor of the Times, a rock 'n' roll music journalist or on Top of the Pops. I felt like if you weren't loud you were ignored, but my year 9 English teacher, Mr Hodgkins, noticed that I did have things to say. He once said he knew that I was 'no shrinking violet' so I decided to be a 'Shrieking Violet'. ... more
